Anand (Elo 2787) employed the old Lasker Defense with the black pieces willing to accept a draw that would lead to a result of 6 : 6 and would have forced a rapid chess playoff. But Topalov weakened his kingside and was unable to escape a loss.
Anand remained world champion.
