Anatoly Karpov – Russian Chess Genius

Anatoly Karpov was the official world champion from 1975 to 1985. After this he lost his title to Garry Kasparov. He played three matches against Kasparov for the title from 1986 to 1990. After Kasparov broke away from FIDE in 1993 Anatoly Karpov became FIDE world champion again.

Karpov is a practical player who wants to make points. He prefers strategically clear positions in which he can use his outstanding positional talent and intuition to plan ahead. He avoids unclear and risky variations unless he knows them better than his opponent. This attitude saves time and energy.

He prefers endgames in which he has a slight advantage because then the risk of losing is much lower than in slightly advantageous middlegames. He prefers to develop his pieces first to their optimum before he undertakes middlegame operations.

Karpov aims to make good moves but does not invest a lot of time to search for the perfect move in every situation. This saves time and avoids time trouble. He is a positional player who likes to win slowly but surely.
